In business, the words “manager” and “leader” are often used as synonyms. It may seem that if a person manages a team, distributes tasks and makes decisions, then they are both a manager and a leader at the same time. But from the point of view of management, this is not entirely accurate.

The manager works with the manageability of the business. They are responsible for ensuring that the company clearly understands:

deadlines;
areas of responsibility;
resources;
work rules;
result indicators;
execution control.

For example, a company has decided to launch a new service. The manager turns this idea into a plan: defines the launch stages, distributes tasks among employees, checks the budget, monitors deadlines, controls the preparation of materials, analyzes risks and evaluates the result after the launch.

For the manager, it is important to translate the goal into specific actions. If the goal sounds like “increase the number of inquiries,” the manager clarifies: through which channels, with what budget, within what timeframe, who is responsible for advertising campaigns, who processes the inquiries and what indicators will be considered successful.

The leader works with another level of planning. They explain why this plan is needed for the team and the business. They help people see not only a list of tasks, but also the overall meaning.

The manager says: “We need to implement a new procedure for working with customer inquiries by the end of the month.”

The leader adds: “This will help us respond to customers faster, reduce lost inquiries and increase trust in the company.”

The manager makes the plan clear. The leader makes it meaningful.

Organization of work

The manager distributes roles and responsibilities. They determine who performs the task, who approves the result, who controls the deadlines and what tools are needed to perform the work.

Without this function, the team quickly faces chaos: several people do the same thing, important tasks remain without an owner, decisions are made verbally, and the result depends on chance.

In organizing work, the leader helps people understand their role not only formally, but also in terms of meaning. The leader shows how each employee’s contribution is connected to the common result.

The leader influences motivation through trust, recognition, meaning and participation. They help employees feel that their work is important, that their opinion is taken into account and that their contribution matters to the company.

The manager may say: “This task is within your area of responsibility.”

The leader will add: “The quality of this task determines how quickly the customer receives a solution and how stable the entire process will be.”

Management gives a person a framework of responsibility. Leadership helps a person accept this responsibility consciously.

Control is one of the key functions of a manager. The manager checks deadlines, quality, indicators and compliance with the plan. Their task is to notice deviations in time and take action.

support initiative;
explain the reasons for changes;
make difficult decisions openly and with arguments.

Leadership is built on trust. Employees evaluate a leader not only by words, but also by actions. If the leader demands responsibility but does not keep their own agreements, trust falls. If they talk about development but do not give people the opportunity to show initiative, leadership remains a formality.

What is more important: a manager or a leader

For business, it is more important not to choose between a manager and a leader, but to understand which role is needed in a specific situation.

When there is chaos in the company, deadlines are missing, tasks are lost, documents are not properly prepared and no one understands areas of responsibility, management is needed first. A system must be built.

When processes exist, but the team works formally, resists change and does not show initiative, more leadership is needed. The company needs to work with trust, meaning and engagement.

When the company grows, both roles are needed at the same time. Growth increases pressure on both processes and people. Without management, growth turns into chaos. Without leadership, the team may not withstand the changes.

A mature leader constantly asks themselves two questions:

do we have enough order, processes and control;
do we have enough trust, meaning and engagement.

If one of these elements is weak, management becomes unstable.
