A new perspective on paternity leave: what changes is Moldova’s legislation preparing?
In recent years, the role of fathers in raising children has increasingly moved beyond stereotypes. Care, involvement, and support from the very first days of a child’s life are both a natural norm and a legal right. And now, in Moldova, this approach is receiving even stronger legislative confirmation.
The government has initiated a revision of the procedure for granting and paying paternity leave. Amendments are planned to the current Regulation (Government Decision No. 1245/2016), in order to synchronize it with the updates introduced by Law No. 156/2025 to Law No. 289/2004.
What does this mean for fathers?
According to the new amendments to the Labor Code (Article 124¹), the father of a newborn is entitled to 15 calendar days of leave. If twins or triplets are born in the family, leave is granted for each child separately. The same rule applies in the case of adopted children.
And that’s not all. In the event of the birth or adoption of multiple children, each father will be granted leave as well as a separate allowance for each child. This provision is set out in the updates to Law No. 289/2004.
Why is this important?
Because it is about recognizing the role of fathers, supporting families, and taking a step toward modern employment standards. The state is expressing support for employers and families by expanding opportunities for flexible interaction within the framework of labor legislation.
